Just before a group of over 100 guests arrived for the launch of the exhibition, the young artists got to experience their work for the first time in full 8 speaker glory. It was a big moment for the project.

In workshop 6, we explored the acoustics of the foot tunnel that passes under Brighton Racecourse, improvising with percussion instruments and simple electronic synthesizers to sound and activate the underground structure. The artists devised simple improvisational rules and experimented with timing, movement, patterns, timbre and the materials of the tunnel. In one performance each participant used a single hand bell and took different positions along the tunnel, sounding their instrument only when the previous bell ring had died away.

In workshop 5 we played experimental rhythm machines, collaboratively exploring unusual time signatures and patterns. A simple microphone and speaker feedback system combined with the chalk graphic scores created in previous workshops conjured up oscillations that seemed to hover in the room, with subtle timbral movements dictated by the shapes of archaeological explorations.

In workshop 4 we used audio sampling software to manipulate and play with the field recordings made in previous sessions. Everyday sounds of Whitehawk mixed with the deep resonating percussion and gritty cracking of flint, bend, morph and twist into unique textures under the control of the young artists. Artificial reverberation effects were explored, transporting us to ever deeper sound worlds; cavernous spaces, cave spaces, space spaces.

Last week's Neolithic Cannibals workshop at Brighton Museum offered a unique journey into deep history. Exploring the Archaeology Gallery with Jon Sygrave from Archaeology South East, the young artists were transported to the Neolithic era, learning about the remains of Whitehawk Camp while surrounded by mysterious artifacts.

In workshop 2, the young artists, guided by Simon, expanded their listening to the outdoors, exploring the sonic environment around The Crew Club.
